Embark on a journey into the last wild frontier of Ladakh - Zanskar Valley, where glacier-fed rivers carve silent valleys, snow leopards still roam unseen, and ancient gompas cling to cliffs like whispered prayers. Long cut off from the world, Zanskar is now accessible through the Shinku La Pass, allowing summer access without altering its remoteness.
This expedition is not a tour, it’s an unfolding. Of winding trails, timeless villages, and sacred spaces hidden deep in the folds of the Himalayas. It is designed for the rare traveller - one who seeks not just sights, but stillness.
Our route begins in the flower-filled Miyar Valley, often called the Yosemite of the Himalayas, known for its alpine meadows, rare medicinal herbs, and glacial rivers that change hues with the sky. Here, we explore secluded trails that wind past abandoned hamlets, hanging bridges, and ancient shrines tucked under the ridgeline - all against a backdrop of jagged peaks and wildflowers.
As we cross into Zanskar, we enter a world largely untouched by modernity. At the heart of this journey are the monasteries of Karsha and Stongdey, where chanting echoes through painted halls and time folds inwards. We stay with locals, walk with monks, and witness a way of life that continues as it has for centuries.
We continue to Phugtal Monastery, built into a cave cliff, and then to the awe-inspiring monolith of Gonbo Rangjon, a peak that stands alone like a sacred sentinel. Nights are spent under stars, days with prayer wheels and panoramic valleys.
This itinerary blends exploration with presence, community with solitude, and gives you rare access to one of the last truly wild places in the Indian Himalayas.
Please note: Basic fitness is expected from all travellers considering hikes which are part of the plan.
View Full ItineraryWe start early from Manali, winding past the famous Atal Tunnel - entering Lahaul valley with brief halts in Sissu overlooking the waterfall and lake. A short drive further takes upto serene shrines of Trilokinath and Mrikula Mata before entering the wild and unspoiled Miyar Valley — a hidden Himalayan garden of meadows and glaciers. Trilokinath is known for its confluence of Hinduism and Buddhism with one of its kind statue of Lord Shiva and Buddha abode his forehead. The articulate wood work at Mrikula Mata mandir will stay with your forever as a blessing. We further drive upto Miyar and in the evening take a walk closer to the river bed and the last village. Overnight in local camps. Kindly expect basic camps with only BSNL service in this valley.
A leisurely morning and breakfast in Miyar before heading out. We go for an early morning walk around the river front - learning about the flora and fauna of the valley. We then head to the other side of Lahaul. On our way to Jispa, we visit the peaceful Shashur Monastery in Keylong, offering sweeping views of the Bhaga Valley. Overnight at camps by the river in Jispa.
We rise early for the long but majestic drive across the newly accessible Shinku La Pass (5,091m), now the gateway to Zanskar. Here, we get a brief visit of the majestic Gonbo mountains for a quick tea stop - we then head onto Padum. Along the way, we stop at the haunting rock-carved Ichar Buddha, watch waterfalls cascading into deep gorges, and witness the landscape shift from green Lahaul to the barren mysticism of Zanskar. By evening, we descend into Padum, the cultural heart of Zanskar, surrounded by vast brown valleys and glacial rivers. Padum is bustling compared to what lies ahead — a perfect pit stop.
Overnight at a hotel in Padum.
Today is devoted to Zanskar’s spiritual soul. We first visit Shila waterfall, one of the few waterfalls in the otherwise barren ladscape of Ladakh. Later we head to Karsha Monastery, the largest in the region, with sweeping views over Padum plains and painted halls echoing with centuries of prayer. We then head back to Padum for some lunch under the trees - then later head to Stongdey, perched dramatically on a hill - its monks welcoming, and murals dazzling. We spend unhurried time soaking in the stories, scriptures, and stillness of these thousand-year-old gompas. The rest of the day is free for slow wandering, local cafés, or an evening walk along the Zanskar River.
Overnight at a hotel in Padum.
We depart Padum and drive east through deep valleys and an off-road to Dzongkhul Monastery, sculpted right into the rock face of a cliff. Pilgrims believe it was founded by Naropa himself. After this spiritual pause, we continue along the wild Suru Valley to witness one of Zanskar’s natural wonders — the massive Drang Drung Glacier, winding like a frozen serpent across the mountains. By dusk, we arrive in Rangdum, a remote wind-swept outpost flanked by glaciers and a solitary monastery.
Overnight accommodation in camps at Rangdum.
We trace back toward central Zanskar, stopping at the fortress-like Sani Monastery, one of the oldest Buddhist sites in the Himalayas. The palace in the Sani village has intricate paintings and murals to keep staring at. We then drive ahead and make the short walk to Raru lake. Our final destination today is Purne, a rustic settlement nestled by the Tsarap River, serving as the base for the sacred Phugtal hike. Expect absolute silence, starlit skies, and that rare feeling of being far from everywhere.
Overnight at a homestay cottage in Purne.
We begin our morning hike to Phugtal Monastery, built into the cliffs like a swallow’s nest. The walk itself is meditative - cliffs on one side, river on the other - culminating in one of the most awe-inspiring monasteries in the world. The barren brown contrasts with blue waters of Tserap river- here to transcend you into another dimension. After returning to Purne, we then drive to the base of Gonbo Rangjon, a lone standing mountain considered sacred by both Buddhists and Hindus. As the sun dips, we camp & stay nearby, bathing in the golden light of spiritual quiet.
Overnight at camps in Gonbo Rangjon.
We retrace our route back across Shinku La, saying farewell to the moonscapes, stupas, and prayer walls of Zanskar. With hearts full and silence inside, we drive back to the green valleys of Manali - a return not just to altitude, but to the rhythms of everyday life. The journey ends, but Zanskar stays.
We conclude the trip with a drop at New Beas Bridge around 2 PM.
